How Various Air Conditioner Parts Work to Cool Your House

July 13, 2024

As the scorching Odessa, TX summer sets in, understanding how your air conditioner works can make all the difference in keeping your home comfortably cool. Modern air conditioners are complex systems comprising several key components, each playing a crucial role in the cooling process. Let’s delve into these parts and how they work together seamlessly to beat the heat.

Thermostat

The thermostat serves as the control center of your AC system. When the indoor temperature rises above the set level, it triggers the air conditioner to start cooling. Once the desired temperature is reached, the thermostat signals the system to shut off, maintaining optimal comfort and efficiency.

Evaporator Coil

Located inside the indoor unit, the evaporator coil is responsible for absorbing heat from indoor air. As warm air passes over the coil, the refrigerant inside absorbs the heat, causing it to evaporate and transform into a cool gas.

Compressor

The compressor in the outdoor unit plays a pivotal role in the refrigeration cycle. It receives the low-pressure cool refrigerant gas from the evaporator coil and compresses it into a high-pressure hot gas. This process significantly increases the temperature of the refrigerant, preparing it for the next stage of heat exchange.

Condenser Coil

Once the refrigerant leaves the compressor as a hot gas, it moves to the condenser coil in the outdoor unit. Here, the hot gas releases its heat to the outside air through metal fins and transforms back into a liquid state. This crucial step allows the refrigerant to cool down before returning to the evaporator coil to repeat the cycle.
